The musical group Hawaii Loa was born under the banyan tree at the Moana Hotel during the closing years of the 20th century. Its members include Joseph "Joey" Mokulehua, Eddie Palama and Herb "Kawaipiolani" Lee, Jr. All reside in the Ko`olau or the Windward side of O`ahu.
In the na mo`olelo - the stories - of Hawai`i, there are two influences which inspired the three men to become stewards of this very important name Hawai`i Loa which translates as distant Hawai`i.
The first Hawai`i Loa was a famed Polynesian navigator who was said to have discovered these island jewels nearly 2,000 years ago. The other involves a place - Pu`u Hawai`i Loa - a small hill in Windward O`ahu.
For nearly 100 years, the Moana has been the "grand dame" of Waikiki hotels, the symbol of grace and elegance beside the gentle waves rolling onto the shore. Then, starting in 1935, she became home to HAWAII CALLS for nearly 40 years bringing Hawaiian music, myth, culture, hula, and the Aloha Spirit to the rest of the world.
The hapa haole - literally half-foreign - music with its English language lyrics and its Hawaiian rhythms supplied by slack key & steel guitars, the ukulele, and percussion instruments became Hawai`i in the minds of millions of people all around the globe. Today's hapa haole music provides listeners with the opportunity to step back in time when life was simpler and our lives more serene.
